Convert your garage into an office or extra living space

According to a survey conducted by the RAC, only one out of four householders who have a garage use it for the overnight parking of a car - most prefer to use it for storage - but converting a garage into a room can be done quite easily for a relatively modest outlay.

More and more people opt to work from home nowadays so converting a garage into an office is a popular and practical solution to the pressing need for more space. For a growing family, an extra bedroom could mean you’d be able to stay put rather than moving house, or you might want a room for leisure activities – a playroom for the children perhaps, a music room or a home cinema, a den for a teenager or even your own bar.

Turn your garage into a utility room

With the addition of plumbing and electrical services, a utility room would be particularly useful to those houses with limited kitchen space, and a bathroom or shower room would add ground floor facilities to those with just an upstairs bathroom.

Double garage = double the space

A detached or integral double garage gives even more scope for conversion. Along with the options already outlined, there would be enough room for a completely self-contained ‘granny annexe’ for instance, or, by knocking through the connecting wall to an integral garage, you could substantially enlarge your kitchen or living room. Or why not sub-divide, giving you two rooms for the price of one?
